We have resolved the problem that gave intermittent MySQL connection errors.
An error in the configuration of our service monitoring system caused the MySQL service to be restated repeatedly. This resulting in websites intermittently throwing database connection errors.
All is back to normal again. The configuration error was simple typing error — lesson learned!
